The Calais Conservation Commission's Fall Foliage walk in the undiscovered Chapin Town Forest will be held on Saturday, October 10, starting at 9:30 a.m. It will be led by CC member Drew Lamb and ecologist Eric Sorenson. We will be meeting at the old spring pull-off on the south side of Pekin Brook Road between Route 14 and the George Road/Peck Hill intersection (the former Armstrong Farm). There is ample room to park on the road if the pull-off area is full.
We will walk to the Chapin Town Forest along the old Class 4 Chapin Road, passing a beautiful old rock culvert. In the Town Forest we will visit shrub and forested wetlands, and a very nice Rich Northern Hardwood Forest with a large sloping fern glade. Other than Chapin Road, there are no trails in the Town Forest, so we will do some bush-whacking, but the walk is not strenuous. When CC members recently walked through the forest, we were accompanied by 5 children of various ages, one as young as five years old, and they all did fine.
The total walk will be less than two miles and we will aim to be back at the parked cars by noon.
We hope you'll come on this walk with us on Saturday. The forest is really lovely, and this is a great opportunity to explore it with people who know their way around it. Everyone is welcome, including residents of other towns. Bring water and masks.
Please call or email Stephanie Kaplan with any questions or if you plan to attend so we know how many people to expect. 456-8765; skaplan@jackhill.org.
