Relocalizing VT Th 9 am: VT's Global Warming Solutions

Past event
Oct 8, 2020, 9 to 10:30 AM

Thursday morning on Goddard College Community Radio: How is Vermont's approach to climate change going to be different with new legislation, and why stock market returns point to the profitability of local investment.

9:00 - 10:00 am
Vermont's new Global Warming Solutions Act was passed over Gov. Phil Scott's veto. Proponents commend the law for transforming existing emission reduction goals into requirements and establishing a diverse Climate Council to recommend climate and resilience solutions, amongst other things. Scott says it "will lead to inefficient spending and long, costly court battles." Johanna Miller, director of the energy program at Vermont Natural Resources Council will talk about why her organization was part of a coalition urging the passage of this bill.

Michael Shuman, a guru of local investing, revisited some calculations about the long-term returns of the stock market. He argues that an apples-to-apples comparison of local investments with global markets would lead the investor to target a 5% rate of return for the local investments, to match the returns from global markets. He'll explain why this number—lower than used in many contexts—makes sense.
