New Historic Farmstead Pathway at Retreat Farm

Past event
Oct 8, 2020, 4 to 6 PM

Grab your jacket and join us for a fascinating new pathway at Retreat Farm. The public is invited to celebrate the installation of a new interpretive pathway telling the history of the farmstead. The signs' writer, Jan Albers, award-winning historian and author of Hands on the Land: A History of the Vermont Landscape, will be sharing remarks about the history of the site. Thirteen colorful new signs, illustrated with vintage photos, tell the stories of how the beautiful barns and buildings have been used over the decades. Founded as part of a model hospital in 1836 by the Brattleboro Retreat, the Farm has many stories to tell us about the changing relationship Vermont farmers have had with the land.

This iconic Vermont dairy farm was built to feed a hospital community that numbered in the hundreds. What animals had a home here? How much meat, milk, fruits, and vegetables could a farm this size produce? How did they store their bounty? How many people could the land feed? Come find out the answers to these questions and more on Thursday afternoon.
