The Radical Forest Manager
Monday, October 5
7:00 – 8:30 PM
Forests in Vermont frame and enrich our lives, making our state a beautiful place to live while also providing many critical services: cleaning our air and water, providing habitat for birds and other wildlife, sequestering and storing carbon and much more."The Radical Forest Manager" focuses on two aspects of forest management:The first is how we can manage our forests better; forest management is thought of by many as a form of environmental degradation, the exploitation of our ecosystems. However, as our understanding of forest ecosystems improves, it becomes clear that forests can be managed in a way that supports their complexity, diversity and resilience and helps them recover from past human land use.The second aspect is the recognition that forests, and our management of them, doesn't exist in a vacuum. Climate change, resource extraction and environmental degradation threatens peoples, species and ecosystems worldwide. The negative impacts of resource consumption is applied unequally and unjustly to peoples and communities in the United States and across the globe. While some of these problems may seem remote, is it possible that Vermont's forests have a broader role to play in crafting a more just and sustainable world?

Join Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper, and CVU's Access program for a free presentation focusing on the role that forests and forest management play in our past, present and future with an eye on social and environmental justice in Vermont and across the globe. Ethan will discuss what responsible, ecological forest management looks like, and how it can help support justice, equity, heathy communities and healthy ecosystems here in Vermont and world-wide.
