Fascism—Then and Now: DSA Study Group (3rd of 4)

Past event
Oct 6, 2020, 7 to 8:30 PM

In countries throughout the world, authoritarian politicians as well as far-right parties and formations have become a danger. Donald Trump has galvanized a new right within and beyond the Republican Party. Neo-fascist Jair Bolsonaro rules in Brazil, Hindu Fundamentalist Narendra Modi is in control of India, and Marine Le Pen's National Rally contend for power in France.

Join local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for the third of a four-part Zoom-based discussion on the nature of fascism and today's far right. Having discussed Clara Zetkin's classic analysis "Fighting Fascism: How to Struggle and How to Win" we move to contemporary socialist analyses of the far right and fascism in the US and internationally.

For the 6th we'll read five essays offering different perspectives: Dave Renton, "What Is Different About Today's Far Right" (https://isreview.org/issue/112/what-different-about-todays-far-right); Sam Farber, "Donald Trump, Lumpen Capitalist" (https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/10/donald-trump-lumpen-capitalist-class-elections); Sasha Abramsky, "Fascism Is The Core of Trump's Message" (https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/trump-fascism-republicans-election/); Dylan Matthews, "I Asked 5 Fascism Experts Whether Donald Trump's A Fascist" (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2015/12/10/9886152/donald-trump-fascism); Joe Allen, "A Threshhold Has Been Crossed: The Threat of the Far Right Today" (https://www.tempestmag.org/2020/09/a-threshold-has-been-crossed/).
