In this 4-part series, the primary focus of this course is exploring the founding documents--the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. This course leads you to look at the history leading up to American independence as well as the philosophers and the new sense of individual freedom that sent settlers to the New World and profoundly influenced the development of our United States Constitution.

This curriculum seeks to navigate the period from the exploration of the Americas in the late 15th century to the colonial struggle for independence and the ratification of individual rights in a new nation. This period reflects a developmental transformation that moved social governance from Feudalism to the Renaissance, Reformation and Age of Enlightenment, to the early stages of what we, today, characterize as modern Western Civilization, culminating with the United States' Declaration of Independence and the creation of a unique Constitutional Republic based on individual Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness in a free market economy. Most importantly, we will explore what these founding ideas mean for each of us today and how we seek to embody the "American Dream."
