Fascism - Then and Now: DSA Study Group (2nd of 4)

Past event
Sep 29, 2020, 7 to 8:30 PM

In countries throughout the world, authoritarian politicians as well as far-right parties and formations have become a danger. Donald Trump has galvanized a new right within and beyond the Republican Party. Neo-fascist Jair Bolsonaro rules in Brazil, Hindu Fundamentalist Narendra Modi is in control of India, and Marine Le Pen's National Rally contend for power in France.

Join local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for the second of a four-part Zoom-based discussion on the nature of fascism and today's far right. We will begin by reading and discussing Clara Zetkin's classic analysis of Adolph Hitler's rise—"Fighting Fascism: How to Struggle and How to Win"—before exploring contemporary socialist analyses of the far right and fascism in the US and internationally.

For the 29th we'll focus on Zetkin's "Fighting Fascism" pp. 67–104 and Leon Trotsky's pamphlet "Fascism: What It is and How to Fight It" (https://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/works/1944/1944-fas.htm). Purchase Zetkin's short book or ebook at discount from the publisher via https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1088-fighting-fascism.
