We welcome you to participate in a Community Tile project for youth ages 5-15, Thursdays September 24th, October 1st at 10am and Saturday October 10th in the backyard at the Greensboro Free Library.
Emma Podolin will teach students how to make a 7.5"x7.5" tile in a three class series. The first two classes will include carving, sgraffito, texture, applique and surface design techniques. We will tie books into our time together. For the last class we will invite the larger community to gather and enjoy autumn treats as we create a community 'mosaic', piecing together everyone's tiles in a patchwork style 'quilt'.
This project is largely a metaphor for the children, reminding them that despite current pandemic life, they are still a part of a banded community. By coming together and creating a collective, yet individual project, we can see that although we may feel more alone during this time, we are in fact still a key component of the larger woven tapestry within our community. A photo will be taken of the mosaic in its "quilt" state then it will be taken apart and the tiles will be distributed to individuals to take home, each taking their piece of the larger puzzle. The photo will be printed and hung in the children's room at the library as a reminder of this special project and our connection to one another.
In person space is limited and take home tiles are available for those who wish to participate but not be present at the classes.
This program is free and open to all.
Contact Emily Purdy at greensborokids@gmail.com asap if you would like to sign up for this program and if you would like it to be in person or take home.
