Taft Lodge, perched on a shelf below the Chin of Mount Mansfield, was completed and open to hikers in September 1920. This log shelter, the oldest and largest of the Long Trail shelters was built by the Burlington Section of the Green Mountain Club. Construction of the Lodge was funded by a gift of Judge Elihu B. Taft, a lawyer and judge from Burlington.

The Green Mountain Club will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Taft Lodge on Saturday September 19th. Activities include morning and afternoon hikes to Taft Lodge, Ben & Jerry's ice cream truck 12 to 2pm, guest speakers at 12:30, and unveiling of plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary. Event location is across from Barnes Camp Visitor Center, Mountain Road, Stowe VT. Visit gmcburlington.org for hike registration and full schedule of activities. This outdoor event will follow Vermont COVID safety requirements regarding physical distancing, wearing of masks, and gathering of contact tracing information.
