LECTURE AND BOOK SIGNING
The History of Beekeeping in Vermont
Sunday, September 13, 3:00–5:00 pm
Outdoors at Rokeby (or indoors with social distancing), masks required
Land of Milk and Honey co-author, experienced beekeeper, and "national beekeeping legend" Ross Conrad will present an overview of the history of Vermont beekeeping with a special emphasis on Addison County, the epicenter of beekeeping in the state. Based on extensive research — including at Rokeby Museum — he will share how beekeeping has changed over the years in response to economic, cultural and environmental changes.
Exposing the Challenges: A Closer Look at Women's Suffrage
Sunday, September 20, at 4 p.m.
Social and political movements are complex beasts, to say the very least. During the decades-long struggle for women's right to vote, there were numerous struggles in and outside the movement. Rokeby Director Emerita Jane Williamson and Middlebury College professor Amy Morsman will explore connections to abolition and questions of representation at this special Centennial program. The event will take place outdoors with safe seating for 50; in the case of rain, the event will be held indoors for 25, and video recording will be available the next day. Reservations can be made by calling 802-877-3406, or emailing admin@rokeby.org.
Funding for this project came from a Making of Nations Interpretive Theme Grant from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, and is a Votes for Women: a Centennial Celebration program.
