Surviving the Pandemic Winter: Ballad Singing

Past event
Sep 30, 2020, 3 to 4:30 PM

Ballads, with Leonard Spencer Wednesday afternoons in September 3-4:30

In the time of the pandemic, singing with others has been deemed dangerous. Some singers have been gathering outside, in small groups, to sing together with masks on, 6 feet or more apart, but once the cold weather hits this will no longer be possible. What better way to spend the upcoming pandemic winter than learning the songs of our forefathers and mothers? Ballads are an ancient musical form, with their origins in the 12th century or earlier. Ballads are usually sung alone, have many verses, and tell vivid stories. Learning a few ballads by heart could keep one occupied for many cold and solitary winter pandemic nights.

Leonard Spencer of Cabot Vermont has been singing ballads for the last 60 years. One of his teachers was Una Ritchie, sister of Jean Richie, famed Appalachian ballad singer. Leonard has a vast repertoire, and a unique singing style that harkens back to the ballad's ancient origins. He will sing and teach ballads from Appalachian, Scottish, and English traditions.
