A Call to Honor Suffragists

Wednesday, August 26th. 2020, any time between 11am and 3pm, join the Vermont Suffrage Centennial Alliance (VSCA) in commemorating the historic passage of the 19th amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote.

In the final push for suffrage, women picketed in front of the White House six days a week, holding banners and using silence as protest. These Silent Sentinels, numbering 2000 over two-and-a-half-years, faced derision, arrest, torture, and jail.

Silent no more, we urge Vermonters to gather in public spaces - in front of the post office, town/city hall, or library - urging passersby to reflect on the importance of the vote for all citizens.

This is an impromptu event. No need to register, just let us know at the email below that your group participated.

Carry non-partisan, non-political signs (handmade, ok), wear a 1920s hat or a "Votes for Women" sash, talk to folks about the importance of voting…….all the while observing protocols of social distancing and face coverings. For peaceful gatherings of ten or less, a permit is not required. Suffragists of a century ago wore white, purple and yellow, and a yellow rose.

Have fun with this while doing something important! And email us your photos! info@VTsuffrage2020.org
