GFL August Book Discussion

Past event
Aug 26, 2020, 7 to 8:30 PM

The library now has several copies of our August book discussion selection, Robertson Davies' World of Wonders. World of Wonders stands alone as the story of an illustrious magician who is spirited away from his home by a member of a traveling sideshow, but readers may want to explore the entire Deptford Trilogy, which World of Wonders concludes. Copies of the individual title and the trilogy in one volume are avaiable . Rosann Cook will lead a discussion of Davies' novel both in-person and via Zoom on Wednesday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. Please e-mail the library at greensborofree@gmail.com to request the Zoom link.

Rosann has offered to booktalk some of our new books, and here are some more of her selections:

We have several new titles for mystery lovers. Those who enjoy Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache, will be happy to know we have her latest in the Three Pines series, "A Better Man". If procedurals are more your style, check out Michael Connelly's newest offering, "The Night Fire" featuring Detective Harry Bosch.

Malcolm Gladwell's "Talking to Strangers" is a fascinating excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the headlines. If you've ever wondered how Castro fooled the CIA, Hitler fooled Chamberlain, or Bernie Madoff fooled practically everyone, this "guide book for troubled times" will be of great interest.

We tell girls that they can be anything, so why do 90% of Americans believe that geniuses are almost always men? In "The Genius of Women", Janice Kaplan ponders that question, introduces us to the extraordinary accomplishments of women from the Renaissance to the present day, and offers a blueprint for female geniuses yet to be.

New York Times best-selling author Madeline Miller takes us back to ancient Greece with "Circe", a re-imagination of the formidable sorceress of "The Odyssey", and proves that good story telling is timeless.

"All Adults Here" by Emma Straub is a funny, touching and ultimately uplifting tale of how one can come of age at almost any stage of life.
