Race Conversation Session on Tuesday

Past event
Aug 18, 2020, 6:30 to 7:30 PM

Our next session or Race Conversations is this Tuesday, August 18, 6:30-7:30 via Zoom. If you plan to attend, please RSVP on this Google Form and I'll send a meeting link on Tuesday. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeEIDSrmLgMKIX29rK-HE7udk8qR4c_6fkX5t4ZC_2Pw9PDA/v[...]ink

We will be discussing two chapters of So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo: Chapter 12, "What are microaggressions?" and Chapter 13, "Why are our students so angry?".

Students of color in our community experience a high degree of microagressions and overt racism. As a school system that prides itself on student voice and leadership, this paragraph from Oluo carries special weight: "My goal as a writer and an activist is not to shape future generations. I hope to give a platform, a foundation for our young people to build upon and then smash to bits when it is no longer needed. That is what our kids are doing right now, with all of the work we have done, all that we have dedicated to them - they are building upon it so they can smash it all down. And it's a beautiful things to see."

All are invited to join us, including students, from whom we have so much we can learn.
