Recurring Black Lives Matter Demonstration on the Bristol Green

Hello! My name is Isabelle Gallivan, and I have been meeting with a number of other young activists to discuss how to support the Black Lives Matter movement and help aid in the progression of the racial justice movement. As of right now, we are a group made up of only white individuals, and we feel it is important to recognize that it is not our place to speak for or over Black people. Instead, our goal is to amplify and show solidarity for the BLM movement. We have decided that we will start by organizing bi-monthly demonstrations in Bristol on Main Street by the four way stop lights (on the edge of the Bristol Green). As our surrounding towns are a predominantly white area, for many, racial justice isn't on the forefront of many people's minds, and it can be easy to use our white privilege to distance ourselves with the racial justice movement that is currently happening. The purpose of our demonstrations is to continue to raise awareness of the systemic racial injustices that our nation was founded on and continues to run on, and to force white folks to reflect on their privileges and how they fit into, benefit, and can help change this unjust society we live in today. These demonstrations will occur the first and third Thursdays of each month, and we will plan to be there from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. We will follow social distancing guidelines and wearing masks is required. We welcome anyone who would like to participate in demonstrating with us- bring a sign, a mask, and the willingness to follow the social distancing guidelines. If you have any questions about the BLM movement, we would also be more than happy to discuss them with you as well- just come to the Green and we will happily answer your questions the best we can, recognizing that we do not have all the answers and still have a great deal of unlearning and learning to do. Next week's demonstration will be Thursday, August 6th, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM on the Bristol Green. We hope to see you there!
