Genealogy Project Open House April 16, 6:00 – 7:00

EMES 4th and 5th grade students invite you to an Open House on Wednesday, April 16th from 6:00-7:00 to view our genealogy research projects! Take a walk back in time into the lives of our ancestors!

With a grant from the PTNO, Vermont author Natalie Kinsey-Warnock introduced StoryKeepers program, discussing various ways she uncovered family stories and how they served as catalysts for her writing. She told how her grandmother was the inspiration for her first book, and showed six quilts that she designed and her grandmother made, including the real Canada geese quilt on which a book of the same title was based. She taught us how researching our ancestors can provide us with the inspiration for stories the same way her family stories did for her.

Natalie taught us each how to become history detectives. She introduced us to the history of photography, and to use our detective skills to date photographs using clues from men’s and women’s hairstyles, clothing, and characteristics of the photographs. She taught us the about the census, and how it evolved to provide very specific details about U.S. populations. She taught us the difference between primary and secondary resources, and how to locate primary sources about our ancestors including birth and death certificates, ship and military records, newspaper articles, and photographs. We learned how to record information on family trees, and conducted interviews with our family members to commit to print stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Natalie will also be here on the 16th to celebrate all the work that students have done, and we hope you will join us too.
