DegrowthFest: a Community Reflection and Exploration

Past event
Aug 14 to 16, 2020

Hello ONE Central,

A little collective of local folks called DegrowBTV are organizing an uprising of art installations and happenings centred in the Old North End next month - August 14th to 16th- The idea is to explore potential futures within Burlington, and to provide space for reflection, discussion and community connection.

We would like to invite you as an individual, a home, or an organization, to participate AND attend (either by foot on a spatially distanced self-guided tour or by screen in our virtual gallery).

Your participation can come in the form of hosting an installation in front of your house and/or creating an installation yourself which responds to any of these prompts:

-What has been revealed? What has been revealed by crises and the ways our governments, institutions and communities have responded to them here in this state, city and neighborhood? What has been revealed in your own emotions, your body and your relationships?
-What will be brought forward? What is important for you to bring into the future that you desire? What is important for you to create?
-What will be left behind? When you imagine a future, what do you expect to lose or leave behind? What of that loss will you welcome, and what will you miss?

If you choose to take part we will provide you a 2x2 white plywood canvas to explore and represent your response in advance of the event. Installations and happenings can be simple, elaborate, big or tiny, ranging from a response to the prompt within the borders of the canvas, to written reflections, performances or larger installations.

The acceleration and amplification of ongoing crises – COVID19, police brutality and anti-black violence, alongside climate change, biodiversity loss and countless other crises of injustice -- has laid bare underlying challenges we face and forced us to think deeply about our collective futures. We expect that folks are experiencing this moment differently and we are curious to learn about the many perspectives of those in our community. We aim through DegrowthFest to collectively create the spaces and avenues for these conversations and reflections to emerge.

With gratitude and solidarity,

Meg, and the rest of DegrowBTV
