For our next session on Tuesday, July 21, 6:30-7:30 via Zoom, we will be discussing two chapters of _So You Want to Talk About Race_ by Ijeoma Oluo. These include Chapter 10, "What is cultural appropriation?," and Chapter 11, "Why can't I touch your hair?". If you plan to attend, please RSVP on this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScHIqxOapgjXhPsyKyWF-ic8Me_9GpcyF5HbejB4orHFwy3cA/v[...]ink
Oluo defines cultural appropriation as "the adoption or exploitation of another culture by a more dominant culture" (p. 146). In our society, white culture is the dominant culture. So especially for white people in our community, we must be sensitive to the power dynamics and figure out how to negotiate the line between appreciation/participation and appropriation/exploitation. It is a complex topic but we will strive to approach it with open minds and a commitment to dialogue. First timers are welcome.
