My Grandmothers Hands
Book Group

In light of recent event's which have illuminated the stark reality of racism within our country, many of us are left wondering what best steps can be taken in order to reimagine a world that is just and equitable. Although the answer to this question is as versatile as the oppressive system that racism is born under, establishing a clear understanding of its history and the modalities which can be utilized to loosen its grip on individuals and the collective whole, offer a first step towards the path to healing. Through personal introspection and commitment to social justice, we each can empower ourselves and each other in the process of creating a safe community for all people.

My Grandmother's Hands by Resmaa Menakem intertwines race, trauma, psychology, and biology into a comprehensive model that spans from historical context down to epigenetics. Through this holistic view, My Grandmother's Hands offers its readers the opportunity to begin to investigate and heal their own personal trauma's in regards to racism through a deep connection to the body and senses. Through healing the bodies encoded holding patterns of trauma, we begin to loosen the grips of oppression within our minds and make way for new opportunities and abilities to respond.

With hopes to spark dialogue, healing, and transformation, we will be hosting a book club to go into these shadowy spaces together in a safe and nurturing environment.

Due to the high demand for this book at this time, we are requesting that individuals who would like to purchase this book contact me by Monday, July 6th to ensure a timely delivery. (Books which are ordered through me will also receive a 20% discount by our wonderful and local Galaxy Bookstore!) My Grandmother's Hands is also available on Audible for those of us who are on the go.

This group will meet weekly on Monday's from 5pm-6:30pm (July 20th, July 27th, August 3rd, August 10th, and August 17th) in the Gazebo at Atkins Field to offer a safe social distancing space that can provide shelter in case of rainy weather. Due to both the nature of this work, and the limited covering, we are asking for no more than 10 participants at this time.
