The Spring Residency of the MFA in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts, kicks off this weekend. During the residency week (April 13-19), there are lectures and student exhibitions, free and open to the public. Please join us for the following:

LECTURES/TALKS
--> Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 pm: Visiting designer Lorena Howard-Sheridan offers the lecture, "Sideway glances: Vernacular lettering from the streets of Mexico City." It is a lecture about the big-scale, public lettering signs in Mexico, analyzed from the point of view of graphic design and typography. By extension, it is also a talk about the artists that interpret the forms of the alphabet, creating their own—unspoken—rules of Mexican naive lettering. Noble Lounge, Vermont College of Fine Arts, 36 College Street, Montpelier.

--> Thursday, April 17 at 6:00 pm: Visiting designer Caroline Oh presents, "Visceral Virtual: Design and the Souls of Tools", a lecture and discussion that explore the new frontier of interactive personal tools (smartphones and tablets) and the evolving role of designers — as it shifts away from aesthetics in favor of the refinement of motions and behaviors aimed to give software a soul with its own agency. Noble Lounge, Vermont College of Fine Arts, 36 College Street, Montpelier.
