Relocalizing Vermont: Aging with Grace

Past event
Jul 2, 2020, 9 to 10:30 AM

Thursday morning on Goddard College Community Radio, we'll explore the territory that lies ahead for most of us: old age

9:00 - 10:00 am
It's important to have honest conversations on the subject of aging! Elizabeth Marshall Thomas is 88 years old and lives in New Hampshire. Her name might ring a bell; she is the author of the bestseller, The Hidden Life of Dogs. Now, Marshall Thomas has written a new book called Growing Old: Notes on Aging with Something Like Grace. It explores a wide range of issues connected with growing older: from stereotypes of the elderly as burdensome - to the methods of burial humans have used throughout history - to how to deal with a concerned neighbor who assumes you're buying cat food to eat for dinner! She will discuss what she's learned about aging and her thoughts about death.

Long-time East Montpelier resident Norma Raymond turns 97 on July 15. She says aging was just fine until she hit 96, then things went downhill. From her new home in Heaton Woods in Montpelier, she'll talk about her views on the aging, what it's like to live in quarantine 24/7, and what she wished she had thought about more before now.

10:00 - 10:30 am
Resilience Thoughts, a locally told Extempo story by a woman who became a fashion model in her 80s, and more.
