Reading and Discussion Group
What can I do, as a person who is White, to advance racial justice while I am quarantined at home? As a White person who has always believed in racial equality, what can I do to join the current movement for positive change? If lately you have found yourself asking these questions, you are not alone. Please join us for a facilitated discussion of the book "Waking Up White: And Finding Myself in the Story of Race", by Debbie Irving. Here is a link to the description of the book https://debbyirving.com/the-book/ .
We will meet virtually via Google Chat from 4:00 - 5:00 on July 7, 14, 20, and 27. We will use the discussion prompts that conclude each chapter, adding some of our own as we become more comfortable with the topic and with one another. The facilitator Jessica Handrik is an arts administrator (like the author) who recognized her own misguided intentions and unwitting mistakes all too often while reading the book. We will learn together with humility, courage and kindness. The book may be purchased on Amazon or borrowed from your local library. Jessica has 3 copies she could loan.
If you are interested or have questions please contact Martha martha@cscvt.org with your questions and to get the link to the discussion that begins July at 4:PM. While this discussion group is organized by your Community Senior Center all ages are welcome!
Parades in Richmond over the past 100 Years.
There is are no major 4th of July Celebration in our Communities this year. And that is a big loss! What fun, to all gather lining the streets for the parade-- watching the the first responders, the floats, the bands, the horses, the stilt walkers, you name it! Over the years we have seen a lot. As a way to honor this tradition the Richmond Historical Society and your Community Senior Center are presenting on July 3 at 7:00PM a virtual celebration of parades in Richmond over the past 100 years. This show will include around 50 narrated photos that include Peace Day, Armistice Day, Veterans' Day, the Round Church centennial, May Day, Fourth of July, and temperance parades and even a holy relic procession. Send an email to martha@cscvt.org to get the link to this once in a lifetime opportunity! It won't take the place of the real thing, but it is a great opportunity for parents, grandparents and children to gather and share this bit of history.
