The church bell will toll this Sunday. A noon this coming Sunday, June 21, the bell in the steeple of Williston Federated Church will be rung for eight-and-a-half minutes, acknowledging the duration of the act of violence that resulted in the death of George Floyd.
We will ring the bell on Sunday as an act of reverence in memory of George Foyd and all people who have lost their lives due to racism and violence in our country and around the world. We will ring the bell as an act of contrition for the ways in which our society has inflicted violence and discrimination on people of color for centuries. And we will ring the bell as an act of public witness to express our commitment to being a part of the solution to end racial inequality and injustice.
In this era of social distancing, we are not encouraging a public gathering as part of this observance. Instead, as you hear the bell ringing at noon this Sunday, we invite you to join us in remembrance, contrition, and commitment. Wherever you are when you hear the bell sound, we invite you to pause in silence and join us in reflecting (and if you feel led to do so, praying) about how we can make a difference to make our world a more just and caring place.
We hope this event will lead to future conversations and opportunities for members of the church and our community to engage in meaningful dialogue around this important issue.
In a spirt of reverence and hope,
Rev. Paul Eyer, Pastor
