A “time exchange” organization formalizes the premise that when neighbors help neighbors, a sense of community is formed and, once formed, the sense of community is strengthened. Individuals’ talents and skills are used to assist members in need or want of those talents and skills. Time is the currency of the exchange. Everyone’s time is valued the same. One hour of time spent helping another member equals one time credit earned. Members provide services that they are capable of and receive those services that they need. These could range from window washing to French lessons to a ride to the grocery store. The exchange organization provides a database to connect skill providers with those seeking that skill. A balance or account of members’ time credits earned and time credits spent is kept by the exchange organization. Time exchanges exist across the United States and particularly in Vermont and New England. The greater Bennington area time exchange is called Hour for Our Community Time Exchange.

To learn more including how to join come to an orientation session. The next orientation will be held at the Bennington Free Library 101 Silver Street on Saturday April 12th at 10:30.
