On this day in 1865 it was announced in Galveston, Texas that all people held in slavery in Texas were free. The Civil War was over and the Emancipation Proclamation had technically freed all slaves, but enforcement of freedom in remote Texas was minimal. 155 years later, we continue to perpetuate racism through systemic inequity and too frequent atrocities from Tulsa, Wilmington, Elaine, and Atlanta to today's police brutality and economic inequalities. These events and actions are part of American History and should be taught and known. We must transform.
