Educator, author and speaker Jessica Lahey will speak on "The Gift of Failure: Fostering Intrinsic Motivation and Resilience in Kids," focusing on the best ways to motivate students to own their education and develop grit and resilience. Lahey will summarize the current research on autonomy-supportive parenting and teaching, competence, rewards, praise, and failure and explain how parents and educators can give students the support and encouragement they need in order to stay motivated over the long term.
Jessica Lahey has been a middle- and high school teacher of English, Latin, and writing for a decade. She writes the bi-weekly "Parent-Teacher Conference" advice column for the New York Times Motherlode blog. Her work appears regularly in the Atlantic and Vermont Public Radio, and she was recently featured on the Today Show. Her upcoming book,"The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed," will be published by HarperCollins.
