Tune into Yestermorrow's Speaker Series Wednesday, June 17th at 7 PM!
A Resilient Community One Yard at a Time
Friends of the Mad River's Storm Smart program works with property owners and managers throughout the watershed to find opportunities to slow, spread, and sink in water where it lands. When the landscape acts like a sponge, it can absorb the impact of storms, reduce runoff and erosion, and filter pollutants - all of which adds up to clean waters, healthy lands, and vibrant communities. The Storm Smart program connects the actions of individual property owners and managers together to create landscape and community level impact. The many dispersed sources of runoff can add up – but so can the opportunities we take to sink in water where it lands.
The Storm Smart program focuses on green infrastructure, which mimic natural processes and often use plants as part of their design. Beyond water management, these projects can improve wildlife habitat, support pollinators, and sink carbon.
Corrie Miller (Friends Executive Director) and Ira Shadis (Stewardship Coordinator) will explore the origins of the Storm Smart program in the unique context of the Valley and share their approach to building resilience into the landscape. Bring your questions about rain gardens, driveway erosion, flood resilience, rain barrels, tree plantings, and green roofs – and we'll do our best to help you make your property Storm Smart.
