Intellectual freedom, privacy, and the surveillance devices in our homes - John Swan Memorial Lecture (virtual)
The proliferation of consumer surveillance devices, like Amazon's Ring doorbell, threaten our liberties because they provide direct access for law enforcement to monitor public spaces. Alison Macrina, director of Library Freedom Project, will discuss Privacy, the Internet of Things (IoT), the new expansion of the surveillance state and how it relates to broader issues of justice playing out on our streets.
We are living in a time of rapidly accelerating threats to our fundamental civil liberties, where various forms of dissent and intellectual freedom are being stifled through increasing police and government crackdowns. With street protests likely to continue, we need to consider ways that our own behavior and consumer choices might harm more vulnerable people's voices.
