We will be gathering virtually this Tuesday, May 19, 6:30-7:30 for Race Conversations sponsored by Waterbury Pubic Library. If you think you might be able to join us, please add your email to this Google Form so that I can send you the Zoom link: https://forms.gle/YPoixzmTNeyZm51p7
We will focus on Chapter 9, "Why can't I say the 'N' word?" from Ijeoma Oluo's book __So you want to talk about race?__ After tracing the history and impact of this word, Oluo addresses a note to white people who are disappointed that they can't use the word without being judged harshly: "It is completely fair that a word used to help create and maintain the oppression of others for your benefit would not be able to be used by you without invoking that oppression..." (p. 141).
On Tuesday we will also be considering Ta-Nehisi Coates' take on this issue. Check out this brief video (or the summary) if you are curious: https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/11/9/16627900/ta-nehisi-coates-n-word
As usual, all are welcome to join. An open mind is required while having read the chapter is not.
