Paddle the Border Spring 17th Year Sunday May 17th
CANCELED due to COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Paddle the Border Fall October 4th Is still being planned.
Newbury Conservation Commission [NCC] wants everyone to get out and enjoy our lakes, rivers. Streams and hiking trails. The great outdoors is and efficient way to let loose and helps with stress but , you must be smart and responsible for your actions. Have fun and always be prepared for an emergency that might arise. The great outdoors is still a wild world that must be treated with respect. A cell phone is not a replacement for a First-Aid Kit, flip flops are great on the beach but not on the trails, and {PFD} personal flotation devices don't work at home in the garage.
BOATING SAFETY TIPS: Have you ever tipped over? What did you do?
Life Vests – PFD Personal Flotation Devices do not work if you leave them at home
Buy a good Life Vest that fits and lets you move. Do you trust your life for $9.99
If its comfortable you will wear it.
Folks bring their PFD but don't wear them. Practice putting it on in the water.
On a warm summer day go to the lake and tip your boat over see what it feels like.
If you do Tip, Hold on to your Paddle. This is important Stay Calm.
Your paddle gives you more reach to get your gear [PFD] and reach out for help.
TURTLE: Roll your boat over to create an air pocket and slide up part way on it and swim to shore. On the river Stay/Get up stream of your boat.
A canoe can weight up to 1600 + lbs full of water.
Don't grab on to someones boat and try to pull yourself in.
More boats flip trying to help someone.
If someone near you tips over, talk to them help them stay calm, help collect their gear and if needed let them gentle hold on to the side of your boat and ferry them to shore.
Experience: Know what you can handle, know your boat and yourself.
All boats Canoes and Kayaks should have a grab rope on both ends.
Clean Boat, Canoes and Kayaks often go to different body of water, don't bring Invasive Species with you on your next Paddle.
Wind can make for tricky paddling, on windy day paddle close to shore.
Don't Litter!! Take out what your brought in!
