May 2: Food Self-Sufficiency and Covid-19

Past event
May 2, 2020, 5 to 6 PM

On Saturday, from 5-6 PM, join us via Zoom meeting for the Capital City Grange's second "Virtual Program" about what the Coronavirus crisis has shown us about how things work--and don't work. This one is about the food system--we've all learned about how much we depend on food coming from far away, as well as from close by.

U.S. farms are having difficulties getting the immigrant workers they depend on. Large food facilities like meat-packing plants are shutting down amidst spikes of Covid-19 cases. Long-distance supply chains seem more fragile than ever. What are sensible policy responses to building a more resilient, self-sufficient food system? As individuals, what are some of the best things for us to be planting to help feed ourselves and our neighbors?

David Zuckerman, an organic farmer and Vermont's Lt. Governor, has thought about food resilience for decades. He'll share his thoughts on these issues, and other questions people bring up, in this hour-long presentation and discussion.
