April 22 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, which calls out for us to think about how we are treating our home. Join others around the country at 12 noon on the 22nd in offering the following Interfaith National Climate Prayer, and if you feel moved after, bang a pot or blow a kazoo or make some other crazy or joyous noise to celebrate our beautiful planet:
We hold brothers and sisters who suffer from storms and droughts intensified by climate change.
We hold all species that suffer.
We hold world leaders delegated to make decisions for life.
We pray that the web of life may be mended through courageous actions to limit carbon emissions.
We pray for right actions for adaptation and mitigation to help our already suffering earth community.
We pray that love and wisdom might inspire my actions and our actions as communities…so that we may, with integrity, look into the eyes of brothers and sisters and all beings and truthfully say, we are doing our part to care for them and the future of the children.
May love transform us and our world with new steps toward life.
This prayer was originally planned to be used in large gatherings as part of Interfaith Power and Light's (IPL) April 17–26 Climate Action Week. IPL works to educate and engage people of faith from all traditions and spiritualities about the moral and ethical mandate to address climate change.
