Burlington activistIan Stokes grew up in post-war England. He knew refugees from Nazi Europe and his awareness of the Holocaust generated overall sympathy for the newly created State of Israel and some of its idealistic principles. He experienced increasing doubts as Israel expanded its military conquests and discriminatory occupation. Now, as a Brit having lived for 40 years in Vermont he feels a personal responsibility for the almost unquestioning governmental support given to Israeli settler colonialism and oppression of Palestinian people. In 2009, together with 4th-year student Ben Silverman, he initiated a call for UVM divestment from companies supporting the occupation, and has been active in Vermonters for Justice in Palestine since then.
