Westminster West, VT – Maya van Rossum, founder of the national Green Amendment movement, will discuss her book The Green Amendment: Securing Our Right to a Healthy Environment and how communities in Vermont can benefit from constitutional protection of their environmental rights at Congregational Church of Westminster West on March 30, 2020 at 7:00pm.
van Rossum's presentation will outline how our current system of environmental protection laws is failing communities across the state and the nation and make the case for constitutional protection of our environmental rights.
"I am honored to be invited to speak about the future of environmental protection. The people of Vermont deserve to have their environmental rights protected as highly as our other fundamental rights like the freedom of speech," said Maya van Rossum, author of The Green Amendment and founder of Green Amendments For The Generations. "Currently only two states – Montana and Pennsylvania – enshrine environmental rights in the Bill of Rights section of the state constitution. I look forward to spreading this idea and working with Vermont communities to empower them to protect their inalienable rights to pure water, clean air, a stable climate and healthy environments."
In 2013, van Rossum led the effort to secure a watershed legal victory that not only protected Pennsylvania communities from ruthless frackers, but breathed legal life into the constitutional right of people in the state to a clean and healthy environment and inspired the Green Amendment movement.
van Rossum then inaugurated the Green Amendment movement and founded Green Amendments For The Generations, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering every American community to mobilize for constitutional change. Since 2013 van Rossum's organization has inspired Green Amendment proposals in New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Maryland and is actively engaged with communities in New Mexico, Maine, Delaware, Arizona, Connecticut, and Vermont.
The mission of Green Amendments For The Generations is to inspire and support the passage and implementation of Green Amendments in every state constitution and at the federal level in order to protect and secure the rights of all people, including future generations, to pure water, clean air, a stable climate and healthy environments.
The event will be held at Congregational Church of Westminster West, 44 Church St. Westminster West, VT at 7:00pm on March 30. The event is free, but donations would be appreciated.
