The Irish republican movement's origins lay in the eighteenth‐century enlightenment movements of republican political philosophy–the same ideas that inspired the American and French revolutions. This talk will examine the range of political thinkers from Locke to Burke to Marx whose ideas influenced the rise of republican thought in Ireland, with a glance to how that history would influence revolutionary movements of the 20th century. Patrick Standen teaches at Saint Michael's College. His presentation is in celebration of the 25th Burlington Irish Heritage Festival.
