Champlain Housing Trust and Housing Vermont develop and steward affordable housing in our community. Majority of residents are from low income households and struggle to afford healthy nutritious food. We've built community gardens at our sites and implemented programming to support residents growing their own food. Between these organizations there are over 100 residents participating in the program, and they've expressed that the purchasing seedlings is a barrier to participating. Responding to this need, donations have been secured of seeds, soil, pots, and grow lights to start seeds indoors this season. Once matured, the plants will be donated to low income gardeners to help alleviate some of the costs of seedlings. In order to make this happen, we need your help with the initial planting!
When: March 7th 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Housing Vermont's Office, 100 Bank St. Burlington VT 05401
What: plant broccoli, cabbage, chives, peppers and basil
There will be opportunities to volunteer in April and May but we really need help this Saturday in order to start the cool weather plants on time. The events are family friendly and will be staffed by a master gardener that can answer garden related questions as well.
Contact Meghan Tedder at mtedder@getahome.org or 802-861-7322 to participate.
