The seventh presentation of Lamoille Valley Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will be a poetry reading. Sigh Searles of Hyde Park will read from the poetry of Hayden Carruth, David Budbill and Leland Kinsey, who all capture the character of our unique place in Northern Vermont. Unless we have moved here very recently, each of us will find their phrases crafted from experience with the land resonating with our knowledge of and feelings for the place in which we live.
Sigh has lived all his life in Northern Vermont and the last 50 years in Lamoille County. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in English and Education from Johnson State College. His undergraduate work included the opportunity to do a full semester's independent study with Hayden Carruth. He had a friendship with both Carruth and Budbill and discovered the amazing poetry of Kinsey about three years ago. These poems resound strongly with him.
Sigh loves introducing people to these remarkable poets and sharing their views and experiences with the people and place in which they lived. He has presented on this topic to the Elderhostel program at Johnson State College and also to the renamed Road Scholars program at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.
Osher Lectures begin at 1:30 sharp. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. at the Commodores Inn restaurant, 823 South Main Street, Route 100 (Lower Village), Stowe. Refreshments follow the presentation. There is a $7 fee for non-members. It is not necessary to make reservations.
Please note that there has been a change in the scheduling of the last two presentations this winter. Our brochure lists James Stewart on "Musical "isms": An Introduction to Music in the 20th Century" for February 26. That has been changed to March 4. Also, Mike DeBonis on Hiking Vermont's Long Trail has been changed from March 4 to February 26.
