FRONT PORCH FORUM
At a time of resurgent nationalism—Vermont is not immune—the effort to eliminate racism is increasingly important. CENTRAL VERMONT READING TO END RACISM, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, has been active in our area for 20 years, raising awareness of the harm racism causes while helping elementary school children learn skills and strategies to counter its negative effects. Once a school has agreed to our program, and a date has been set, our volunteers visit their assigned classroom to read an age appropriate book on the subject. After the reading, the volunteer leads an activity and/or discussion to help children build a world without bullying, racism, and hate.

A gathering for all volunteers—brand new or old timers—is scheduled for Saturday, February 29, 10:00 a.m. to noon, at the Unitarian-Universalist church in Barre. This is an opportunity to discuss classroom experiences, look over our extensive book collection, and learn from demonstrations targeted to both the younger and older students. If you are interested in volunteering, and/or want to learn more, you will be warmly welcomed. Check out our blog: cvreadingtoendracism.blogspot.com/.
