The Montpelier Contra Dance has been held at the Capital City Grange Hall since 1983, according to those who were there. Join us this Saturday for another great dance.
This Saturday, Feb. 15, Dugan Murphy from Portland, ME, will teach and call all the dances from 8:00 to 11:00 as well as leading the newcomers session at about 7:45 PM. Dugan is a very popular caller around the region and the country, as well as being a founder of the Portland Intown Contra Dance series. Dugan is known for his "smooth voice and loud pants"! Come and join us for the intro session if you haven't done this kind of dancing before, or if you just want a refresher. Dugan will be using the gender-neutral role terms Larks and Ravens for calling this dance.
Music for this evening will be by Susan Reid and Gianna Marzilli Ericson, both on fiddle, and Dave Guertin on guitar and perhaps mandolin. Susan, a well-known Montpelier musician, helps lead the Vermont Fiddle Orchestra; Gianna is a great fiddler who is part of the Greenfield, MA, dance scene. Dave, a frequent part of bands for our dance series, comes from Cornwall; he's also part of Red Dog Riley. Together, they'll be playing hot music for the Ides of February.
Tips for dancers: bring clean shoes for dancing on one of the best dance floors in New England, or clean them up with our tools. Wear light, comfortable clothing. Bring a water bottle, or keep hydrated with our water fountains. Come by yourself and find dance partners in our welcoming dance community, and bring your friends along too!
Capital City Grange Hall is at 6612 Rt. 12/Northfield St., just south of the I-89 overpass, 1 mile south of Montpelier. Admission—basic price is $10 for adults, $5 for kids & low-income, $15 for Dance Supporters. This dance is part of the year-round series at the Grange Hall.
