What: Informational Meeting re: Town Meeting Article 18: (Broadband Initiative)
When: Saturday, February 15th, 11am-12
Where: Community Center
The Marlboro Committee for Universal Broadband (MCUB) invites townspeople to attend an informational meeting regarding Town Meeting article 18, which asks the town to consider whether it will join, as a founding member, the Deerfield Valley Communications Union District (CUD). Halifax, Whitingham, and Wilmington will be voting on similar articles, and should the initiative pass in at least two towns, the CUD will be established.
A CUD is a municipal utility district whose purpose is to allow towns to come together to create broadband infrastructure. It's a vehicle by which towns that are under-served by commercial providers can provide fast, reliable, and affordable internet access to their residents.
Topics to be discussed at the informational meeting include:
1. Current state of internet access in Marlboro
2. Reasons why the town is currently underserved
3. History, legal status, and governance structure of CUDs
4. CUD financing models
Representatives of MCUB will also be at Pre-Town Meeting, at 6 pm on Tuesday, February 25th, to discuss Article 18.
