This MLK Day at the MHS Library, the Milton Inclusion & Diversity Initiative is sponsoring a local panel discussion & exhibit reception for one of Vermont's most unique traveling exhibits. Visible in Vermont: Our Stories, Our Voices is a multi-generational photo and story exhibit highlighting the experiences of people of color living and going to school in Vermont. This project is a medium for People of Color (POC) to tell our own stories and convey the impact of racism on our lives.
The photographic exhibitions paired with facilitated discussions create a forum for communication around challenging conversations and questions, including: What does it mean to be a Vermonter? What does it mean to be POC in our state? What are the unique threads of experience that weave together to create the cultural fabric of the places and spaces we call home? How can we build more supportive and collaborative social and cultural structures that uphold a diversity of experience? We have seen this project demonstrate the vibrancy of our towns and communities, and further define an ethics of living in Vermont. These questions will be facilitated in a panel format that involves POC leaders, educators, and community members. Join us for a panel discussion in the MHS Library with folx included in the local exhibit, facilitated by the exhibit's curator. Accessible food (gluten-free, vegan, nut-free) will be provided!
