First Month: The Harlem Renaissance - Illustrated Jazz Lecture
The City of Winooski Community Services Department presents First Month: Roaring 20's – an annual themed celebration of engagement, entertainment, and education! January is a perfect time to bring new and nurture long-lasting community connections.
This illustrated lecture incorporates a blend of visual and audio of the Harlem Renaissance. William Tortolano, Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at the St. Michael's College, will draw upon a vivid recollection of the 1920's and 1930's, the great beginning of the African-American cultural rebirth of music, art, poetry, literature and many other manifestations.
Also included is music from the jazz era, symphonic music, folk songs and integration of era icons as Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and others. The program includes scenes from Harlem and its poet's, artists, authors, and other great leaders.
This event is made possible by the Vermont Humanities Council.
