THE CCC – Roosevelt’s Forest Army
(A program of the Tinmouth Historical and Genealogical Society)
April 27 - 2 PM Old Firehouse - off Vt. 140, Tinmouth
After the Stock Market crashed in 1929, many thousands of businesses closed down and millions of employees lost their jobs. Presidential candidate Franklin Roosevelt, on the campaign trail in 1932, swore he would do something for the hordes of hungry and unemployed, often with families, crowding the roads looking for food, lodging, and work.
Within weeks of his inauguration for president he launched “Roosevelt’s Forest Army”, The Civilian Conservation Corps. Over 3 million needy young men were eventually provided with places to sleep, 3 good meals, some education, and new skills while carrying out forest conservation projects in thousands of camps nationwide. Best of all, they were given hope. Our country is still living off the forest conservation projects, trails, roads, buildings, and dams that the CCC built for us. Come and hear how all of this was accomplished, particularly in Vermont, from Judith Edwards of Springfield. Judith has researched the CCC in Vermont and talked with many CCC-ers. She has written 3 novels for middle grades and beyond about the Vermont CCC, all of which are available in the Tinmouth Library.
