iNaturalist is an easy to use, crowd-sourced species identification app. It allows people to snap photos of animals and plants - then experts from the iNaturalist online community confirm identity. Your photo becomes accepted data about Vermont natural resources, and you can see what others have posted.
iNaturalist began as a web app in 2008, made by students at the University of California, Berkeley and has spread worldwide. Through iNaturalist, the Vermont Center for Ecostudies manages the Vermont Atlas of Life project whose mission is to discover, map, and monitor biodiversity across the state. In just a few years, over 7,000 Vermonters have added over 365,000 observations. It's the largest biodiversity dataset ever assembled for the state, we welcome all to join in! A cell phone or digital camera is needed, to use the app.
Sponsored by Windham Regional Woodlands Association and Vermont Center for Ecostudies.
