In January the Jeudevine Library launches a science-based book discussion series called "Pushing the Limits" through a grant from the National Science Foundation. All book discussions will be on one Thursday, each month at 6 pm. Bring a bag supper. Dessert from the Magic Spoon Bakery will be provided. The discussions will be led by local writer, Jerry Schneider. The first book discussion is on Thursday, January 23, 2020. The book is Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver with the theme of tradition. Copies of the book are available to be checked out now from the library.
Ron Charles of the Washington Post writes, "Kingsolver has written one of the more thoughtful novels about the scientific, financial and psychological intricacies of climate change. And her ability to put these silent, breathtakingly beautiful butterflies at the center of this calamitous and noisy debate is nothing short of brilliant."
Each book discussion will be followed by a separate companion program dealing with some of the themes of the book. This discussion will be followed on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6 pm with Jerry Schneider, creator of the award winning Butterfly Game, doing a beautiful slide presentation about Eastern butterflies. Audiences will learn about the difference between butterflies and moths, where to find butterflies, how to attract butterflies to our gardens, and how to create and maintain butterfly habitat. We will learn interesting butterfly facts and behaviors (Did you know that butterflies taste with their feet?). Learn about the science behind the book. There will be treats from the Magic Spoon Bakery.
