JOIN CENTRAL VERMONT AMERICORPS AND VISTA MEMBERS IN HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Montpelier, VT, January 2, 2020 – Vermont Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) and Vermont Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program (VYT) members are hosting a community meal and racial justice discussion to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 20, 2020 at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier. This free event is open to all community members and begins with a meal at 11:00 a.m. and a discussion around racial justice in Vermont from 12:45 – 3:00 p.m.

Concurrently, VYDC and VYT AmeriCorps members are holding a food drive at Hunger Mountain Co-op from 10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. All donations support the Montpelier Food Pantry, and the Co-op has a list of the Pantry's needs. Community members can also support the Pantry by bringing a non-perishable food item to the community discussion. We hope you will join us in celebrating Dr. King's legacy.

AmeriCorps and MLK Day:
Dr. King was a visionary, principled, and charismatic catalyst for non-violent social revolution. For 25 years, AmeriCorps honors Dr. King's legacy as a "day on, not a day off," in order to promote awareness of the ways in which Americans can help meet the vital needs of their communities and the nation through volunteer service and civic participation on MLK Day of Service.

About AmeriCorps:
VYDC fosters prevention and intervention programs providing opportunities for youth to build developmental assets and the resilience avoid opioid and other substance use, and ultimately become healthy, engaged citizens. VYT members serve to help alleviate poverty by mobilizing resources and building organizational capacity for programs that help low-income youth and families.

"I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities. Faced with apathy, I will take action. Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground. Faced with adversity, I will persevere." -AmeriCorps Pledge
