Darkness supports us in dropping away from the external world to move our attention inwards, touching the depths of our intuition and desire. The darkness of the Winter Solstice can serve us in checking our motivation for our lives, honoring what has been, and creating new intentions as we continue into the new year. Darkness moves us into a state of receptivity and stillness, where we can, even for a small moment, honor "being" over "doing" within our busy lives.
The tone of the "Listening to the Dark" concert will be rooted in honoring darkness as we prepare to call back the light. Attendees are invited to bring personal reflections and intentions while basking in the warmth of Emma's songs, candlelight and good company.
About Emma Back: Emma Back uses a loop pedal to create lush layers of rhythm and harmony, accomplishing a sonic and poetic lyricism that reaches deep into the past and far into the future simultaneously. Her dynamic, multi-dimensional performance features vocal percussion, haunting melodic storytelling, jazz and klezmer inspired violin riffs and harmonic influences ranging from Eastern-Europe to American Roots. Back's 2018 debut release "Little World" investigates how to heal personal and global conflict through bearing witness to issues of feminine power, racial and religious oppression, war and ancestry. Her 2019 concert series furthers this inquiry with new pieces that examine the root of strife and joy as felt through loss/love, death/birth, sickness/health and the inner-life of human beings.
