Please join us for our monthly Race Conversations meeting at Waterbury Public Library on Tuesday, December 17, 6:30-7:30.
We will be discussing Chapter 7 of Ijeoma Oluo's book, _So You Want to Talk about Race?_. This chapter is called "How can I talk about affirmative action?" She shares about her own journey and then systematically dismantles five arguments against affirmative action.
The overall gist is that unless we believe that white men are inherently more deserving, we need to support policies that actively work to even things out. Or as Oluo puts it, "We see disparities in jobs and education along race and gender lines. Either you believe these disparities exist because you believe women and people of color are less intelligent, less hardworking, and less talented than white men, or you believe that there are systemic issues keeping women and people of color from being hired into jobs, promoted, paid a fair wage, and accepted into college."
Please consider coming to discuss her arguments in more detail. All are welcome, whether you have read the chapter or not.
