Songs of Rejoicing and Remembrance: A Thanksgiving Concert
Saturday, Nov. 23, 7pm -- Sunday, Nov. 24, 3pm
110 community and student singers come together to offer historic and newly written songs that express gratitude, jubilation, praise, hope, longing, and tribute. The program includes dynamic gospel and African-influenced songs; an elegy by Johannes Brahms; and a mix of celebratory and reflective works by contemporary composers including Middlebury's Sam Guarnaccia and Peter Hamlin. Jeff Rehbach conducts and Tim Guiles accompanies this annual Thanksgiving concert, with instrumentalists from the Champlain Philharmonic, Vermont Symphony, Burlington Civic Symphony, Middlebury Community Music Center, and Middlebury Wind Ensemble.
You'll hear the world premiere of Wings of the Morning by Peter Hamlin; Sam Guarnaccia's To See A World from Emergent Universe Oratorio; Sing Out Your Joy by gospel composer Victor Johnson; a South African song of praise, Modimo, arr. by Michael Barrett; Dan Forrest's dynamic Ngokujabula! (Rejoicing!); Elaine Hagenberg's The Music of Stillness (poetry by Sara Teasdale); Hymn to the Eternal Flame, in memory of Holocaust victims, by Stephen Paulus; Brahms's romantic setting of Nänie; One Voice by Ruth Moody of the Canadian folk-roots trio Wailin' Jennys; and Ola Gjeilo's Luminous Night of the Soul.
