Pesticide-Free Communities--What in the World is Happening?

On Thursday, November 14 at Manchester Community Library, Philip Ackerman-Leist will share what is happening in the Italian town of Mals and in a growing alliance of communities around the world that are pursuing a pesticide-free future in response to crises related to biodiversity, climate change, and human health concerns. Ackerman-Leist authored A Precautionary Tale: How One Small Town Banned Pesticides, Preserved Its Food Heritage, and Inspired a Movement. The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and a look at the pop-up exhibition that is travelling internationally to share the compelling example of the citizens of Mals. Ackerman-Leist's talk will begin at 7 p.m.

Philip Ackerman-Leist, author of Rebuilding the Foodshed and Up Tunket Road, is the Dean of Professional Education and the School of the New American Farmstead at Sterling College. He and his wife, Erin, farmed in the South Tyrol region of the Alps and North Carolina before beginning their nineteen-year homesteading and farming venture in Pawlet, Vermont. With more than two decades of field experience working on farms, in the classroom, and with regional food systems collaborators, Philip's work is focused on examining and reshaping local and regional food systems from the ground up.

The event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by Transition Town Manchester and the Library. Manchester Community Library is located at 138 Cemetery Ave. in Manchester Center, VT. For more info, call the Library at 802-362-2607.
